  • Upset businessman with glasses on puts his hands over his nose in frustration.
  • "My old agency let me go to cut costs. Now I make more than them, working with their biggest former client."

About six months ago, my agency did a big restructuring and let go of a quarter of the creative team.
  • I was one of them. It was that classic surprise Friday meeting where they told me my position was eliminated, effective immediately.
  • For about four years, I was the lead on their biggest account a huge CPG brand that brought them about $300,000 a year.
  • I knew that client's work inside and out, and I had a great relationship with their entire team.
  • In my exit interview, they told me the rest of the team would absorb my responsibilities and that the client was in good hands.
  • I knew it was a disaster waiting to happen. I started picking up freelance work to make ends meet.
  • About six weeks later, I got an email from the VP of Marketing at my old client's company.
  • She told me my replacement was a nightmare and had completely botched their fall campaign. The creative was way off brand, the media buy was all wrong, and they missed key deadlines.
  • The guy didn't even last 45 days. She asked me point blank if I would consider taking on their account as an independent consultant, saying they were end their contract with the agency.
  • Honestly, it was the easiest yes of my life. I knew exactly what they needed. We agreed on a new contract for $400,000 a year, and now I'm running the whole show for them strategy, creative, execution, the whole nine yards.
  • My old boss messaged me last week asking if I'd heard anything about why they suddenly lost their most important client.
  • I just replied: Wow, that's a real shame. I have no idea. Sounds like they should have held on to the person who was running that account.
  • Turns out some people are more than just a line on a spreadsheet.
  • Upset businessman sits on stairs outside and leans his head back in frustration.
  • nismaniak LOL at any company willingly giving up a customer, especially to someone who left. This story should read, "I approached the biggest client of my former company after leaving, and now I'm being sued over a noncompete"
  • MaiMoua Glad you no longer have a boss! You are your own boss, now.
  • BrewDogDrinker Should have dropped the bomb that you're dealing with it. I would have.
